The size and attractiveness of a printer can be an important consideration for style conscious consumers. The Canon Pixma TS6050 is both compact, and rather attractive. But how well does it perform printing, scanning, and copying?
The new Canon Pixma TS6050 (Black) / TS6051 (White) / TS6052 (Grey) printer appears to share a similar specification to the older Canon MG6650. The print head resolution is 4800 x 1200 dpi., and the mono print speed is 15ppm, and colour approximately 10ppm. Both feature two sided auto duplex printing, and borderless printing. The CIS flatbed scanning resolutions are also identical at 1200 x 2400dpi. The colour LCD touch screen size has remained the same at 7.5cm. So what is the difference between old and new?
Just like other printer manufacturers, Canon realise that in modern day homes, desk space can be limited. So they have reduced the footprint of their new model from 455(w) x 369(d) x 148mm(h) to 372(w) x 315(d) x 139(h) mm. Cutting 83mm from the width, and 54mm from the depth means the TS6050 has a far greater chance of fitting into tight spaces! The new design also appears more stylish with rounded corners and a flip up front display.
The new Canon Pixma TS6050/1/2 printers use the same ink cartridge series as the older MG6650 models. A large PG-570BK pigment black is used for printing text, and the small PGI-571 BK/C/M/Y ink tanks are responsible for providing the ink for images and photographs. Prices of compatible replacement 570/571 cartridges are gradually getting cheaper, but refillable versions remain expensive. A good reason to think twice before buying this machine at the moment. In comparison, PGI550/CLI551 cartridges cost a fraction of the price for the older MG5650 models.
With what appears to be an identical internal specification as the Canon MG6650, a well tested machine achieving impressive review scores of 8.3/10, we expect the new TS6050 to gain similar feedback. The only modification we can see is the more compact and stylish case.
The new Canon TS6050 / TS6051 / TS6052 models are currently selling for around £100. At the moment we feel that the older MX725 / MX925 printers offers better value, particularly as they features a 9600x4800dpi print head which uses cheaper ink tanks. However, if space is limited, the new Canon machines may be the correct fit for your home or small office!
